Storm Damage & Insurance Claims, Handled Properly
Hail and wind account for the largest share of insured home losses in Utah. Claims are won or lost on documentation — and most Utah policies give you only about 12 months to file. Start with an inspection, not a phone call to your insurer.
HM Roofing inspects and documents hail and wind damage, helps Utah homeowners file accurate claims, and meets your adjuster on the roof.
The Process
Three steps to a clean claim.
1
Inspect before you call
We document every mark of damage with photos — slope by slope. You’ll know whether you have a real claim before anything goes on your record.
2
File with evidence
You file with our photo report attached. Claims supported by professional documentation get adjusted faster and more accurately.
3
We meet your adjuster
We walk the roof with the adjuster so nothing gets missed, then complete the approved scope and provide completion documents.
Honest Guidance
When you should NOT file a claim.
Nobody else will tell you this: sometimes filing is a mistake. We will tell you, with photos, when:
✓ The repair cost is below or near your deductible
✓ The “damage” is normal granule loss or aging, not hail — a denied claim still goes on your record
✓ One small repair now protects both your roof and your claims history
Claim window: most Utah policies require filing within about 12 months of the storm. A free inspection settles whether your roof was hit.
Know the Difference
Hail damage vs. normal granule loss.
| Hail damage | Normal aging | |
|---|---|---|
| Pattern | Random strikes, concentrated on the storm-facing slope | Uniform thinning, worst in sun-exposed areas |
| Looks like | Dark circular "bruises," exposed black asphalt | Gradual lightening, granules in gutters over years |
| Mat damage | Soft spots — fractured fiberglass mat under the bruise | Mat intact; shingles just thinning |
| Insurance | Covered storm event — claimable with documentation | Wear and tear — not covered; filing risks a denial on your record |
FAQ
Frequently asked questions.
Almost always yes, for sudden storm damage. The dispute is rarely “covered or not” — it’s “how much damage is there,” which is why documentation before the adjuster visit matters.
Most policies require filing within about 12 months of the date of loss — some less. Check your policy’s “duties after loss” section, and don’t wait.
A single weather claim usually has less impact than people fear. But a denied claim still appears in your history — which is why we inspect before you file.
You can request a re-inspection with your contractor present, submit supplemental documentation, or invoke appraisal under your policy. Our documentation is built to support exactly that.
We provide the inspection report, scope documentation, and meet your adjuster. You file the claim (it’s your policy), but you’re never doing it alone.
